Creative Living Living alone for people with physical disabilities was unheard of prior to the 1970's. It is difficult to explain - perhaps more difficult for people to understand - that individuals with disabilities could be independent, productive citizens. They did not have to spend their lives in nursing homes or elsewhere with little or no motivation. Isolation was neither necessary nor productive for the human spirit. Creative Living helped open the doors of understanding with a bold prototype.
Below are some more important historical events in the development of Creative Living:
- In 1968, Dr. Ernest Johnson led a concerned group of people to discuss the quality of life available for the physically disabled adult. Through dedicated efforts, feasibility studies and financial assistance, Creative Living was founded in 1974 by Dr. Ernest W. Johnson, Charles M. Frank, Peg Dickhaut, Richard N. Maxwell, Paul M. Savage and Edward F. Whipps.
Through assistance by HUD Section 236, Battelle and other private and public organizations, Creative Living I officially opened for occupancy in the fall of 1974- On August 1, 1986, Creative Living II opened its doors ar 150 W. 10th Avenue in Columbus, Ohio
